Hong Kong > The World > The Universe – Exhibition

On Friday 17 June 2011, hipster knick knack stationary/coffee/present shop Kapok, held an opening night launch of “HongKong> The World> The Universe” a graphic print exhibition they will be showing on their shops wall until July 10, 2011. The new work by illustrator Tania Willis is a series of graphic prints exploring travel, wanderlust and homesickness, elements I can relate to well.
Icons of London, New York and Hong Kong convey the thrill of the foreign and the comfort of the familiar. The work has a playful and graphic directness that combines digital and traditional drawing skills with a vibrant palette. The prints contain a very pop-art sentimentality, which is perfectly befitting a space such as a hipster store/come coffee joint in the back alleys of Wan Chai. Born in the UK, Tania trained at the Royal College of Art and now a resident of Hong Kong (her home),  her armchair travel providing her greatest inspiration.
Her renowned cartography has appeared in publications such as: Time, Faber, BBC, The Guardian, Conde Nast, Mandarin Oriental, Cartier and The Telegraph.
‘Cocktails’, nee Hipster-esque PPR’s and G&T’s were served in plastic cups, and cupcakes were handed around for nibbles. Overall the night had a very hip vibe.
